Juan Bautista Rosario-Sandoval, Mail Robbery, Rhode Island 2024

In a shocking display of violence, a U.S. Postal Service carrier was left battered and bruised after being assaulted by two thugs in Providence. Now, one of the perpetrators is facing the music.

Juan Bautista Rosario-Sandoval, 31, a Providence man, was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison for his role in the robbery and assault of a U.S. Postal Service carrier and the trafficking of over 500 grams of cocaine.

The nightmare began on September 18, 2021, when Rosario-Sandoval and an accomplice approached a mail carrier and attempted to forcibly take a Priority Mail Express Parcel addressed for delivery to a Providence address. When the postal worker refused to hand over the package, the pair opened the doors to the carrier’s vehicle, pulled at and punched the carrier, and then stole the package, leaving the worker with several injuries.

Rosario-Sandoval pleaded guilty to the charges on December 23, 2023, admitting to conspiring to assault and rob a U.S. mail carrier, as well as conspiring to possess over 500 grams of cocaine. The investigation revealed that Rosario-Sandoval had received multiple packages of cocaine delivered through the U.S. Mail to addresses in Providence.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ly Chin, with the assistance of United States Postal Inspection Service agents, Providence Police, and the Rhode Island State Police.

Rosario-Sandoval, a citizen of the Dominican Republic, will face immigration proceedings upon completion of his sentence.
