Sergio Yeremi Martinez-Mejia, a Dominican national, has pleaded guilty to falsely claiming a social security number that was assigned to another person.
According to the investigation, Martinez-Mejia was suspected of being a foreign national illegally in the United States by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on March 24, 2015. He initially told the Portsmouth Police Department that he was a Puerto Rican U.S. citizen and provided a certain social security number that he claimed was his.
However, during an interview with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deportation Officer on March 24, 2015, Martinez-Mejia claimed that he was born in Puerto Rico and provided a social security number not assigned to him.
The defendant’s fingerprints were submitted to the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, which returned a match for Martinez-Mejia, who had been previously ordered deported from the United States to the Dominican Republic on July 11, 2011.
Records from the U.S. Social Security Administration revealed that the social security numbers Martinez-Mejia claimed were not assigned to him. He faces sentencing at 11:30 AM on August 9, 2016, and will be deported after serving his sentence.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Portsmouth Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alfred Rubega is prosecuting this case.
The guilty plea highlights the importance of verifying identities and social security numbers in order to prevent such scams from occurring in the future.
