Dominican National Gets 15 Months for Fake ID

Boston’s streets just got a little safer for one Massachusetts resident whose identity was stolen by a Dominican national. Altagracia Baez Guerrero, 27, was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison in a case that highlights the dangers of identity theft.

Guerrero, a Boston resident, pleaded guilty last month to false representation of a Social Security number before U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns, who handed down the sentence. Guerrero will also serve one year of supervised release following her prison term.

The crime took place on March 14, 2016, when Guerrero falsely represented that a Social Security number was hers in an application for a learner’s permit at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.

The victim, a woman who had never visited, lived in, or worked in Massachusetts, discovered that Guerrero had stolen her identity in 2018. The victim learned that W-2s in her identity were issued for income earned at two different Massachusetts businesses the previous year.

Further investigation revealed that Guerrero had provided a home address in Dorchester, the same address she used when applying for the learner’s permit. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling, Jason Molina, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston, and Scott Antolik, Special Agent in Charge of the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations, Boston Field Division.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra S. Bower of Lelling’s Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case, which highlights the importance of protecting one’s identity in a digital age.

Grimy Times has learned that Guerrero’s sentence is just the tip of the iceberg in a growing trend of identity theft cases in the Boston area. As the city continues to grow and become more connected, residents must remain vigilant in protecting their personal information.
