BOSTON – In a stunning admission of guilt, Saddan Bautista Diaz, a 28-year-old Dominican national, pleaded guilty in federal court yesterday to a brazen act of Social Security fraud.
Diaz, who resided in Dorchester, Massachusetts, admitted to using the identity of a Puerto Rican citizen to obtain a Massachusetts Identification Card. The fraudulent scheme, which involved presenting a false birth certificate and Social Security card, was part of a larger sweep by federal law enforcement that targeted 25 individuals for document and benefit fraud.
The fraudulent act occurred on June 27, 2014, when Bautista Diaz applied for an ID under the guise of the Puerto Rican citizen. His deceitful application was granted, allowing him to enjoy the benefits associated with this stolen identity.
Under federal law, false representation of a Social Security number carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000. Sentencing for Diaz is scheduled for September 4, 2019, before U.S. District Court Chief Judge Patti B. Saris.
The investigation into Bautista Diaz’s crime was a collaborative effort involving multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, Homeland Security Investigations, Health and Human Services, Social Security Administration, Housing and Urban Development, Labor, State Department Diplomatic Security Service, Postal Inspection Service, Massachusetts State Police, and the State Auditor’s Office.
United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling led the announcement of the plea agreement, with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Burzycki prosecuting the case on behalf of the federal government.
