A 24-year-old District man opened fire from a moving Honda Accord in Southeast D.C. in 2015, unleashing eight rounds into a dark alley and killing 39-year-old Marcellus Green. The shooter, Dominique Williams, was convicted on March 12, 2018, by a jury in D.C. Superior Court on charges of second-degree murder while armed, assault with a dangerous weapon, and multiple firearms offenses.
The attack occurred just after 1 a.m. on September 19, 2015, in the 3200 block of 28th Street SE. Williams, seated in the rear passenger side of the Accord, leaned out and opened fire on a group of three men and an 11-year-old boy. None of the victims had been involved in prior disputes Williams had with others in the neighborhood. Green was struck once and pronounced dead about an hour later at the hospital.
Williams fled the scene with two others — Maricco Knight, 25, of Washington, D.C., in the front passenger seat, and a third man driving. Within minutes, MPD officers arrived and received witness descriptions of the vehicle and its license plate. At 1:40 a.m., an officer spotted the Accord in a different part of the city. Before sirens could be activated, the car sped off, triggering a 20-minute chase that ended in a crash. A 9-millimeter handgun was tossed from the vehicle during the pursuit.
The driver and Knight were apprehended within two minutes of the crash. Williams escaped and remained at large until July 20, 2016, when he was arrested at the residence of Knight’s girlfriend. By then, an arrest warrant had been issued three months after the shooting. Evidence presented at trial showed Knight knowingly helped Williams evade capture, even after being informed by law enforcement that Williams was wanted for murder.
Maricco Knight was convicted as an accessory after the fact and for obstruction of justice. Both Williams and Knight face sentencing on May 11, 2018, before the Honorable Judith Bartnoff. The convictions are the result of a joint investigation led by the Metropolitan Police Department and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu and MPD Chief Peter Newsham praised the investigative work of MPD officers and legal staff, including Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Liebman, who investigated and prosecuted the case, and Ahmed Baset, who handled the trial. Also recognized were forensic and support personnel: Michael Ambrosino, Benjamin Kagan-Guthrie, Leif Hickling, Alesha Matthews, Zachary McMenamin, David Foster, Lesley Slade, Marcia Rinker, Korey Johnson, and Shani Brown.
