Donald Hoff, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, South Dakota 2026

A Sioux Falls man has been sentenced to nearly 2 years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.

According to a recent court hearing, U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier sentenced Donald Hoff, 34, to 22 months in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release, and ordered him to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Hoff was convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. The sentencing took place on March 2, 2026.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hoff possessed a Taurus 9mm pistol on March 21, 2025, in Sioux Falls, as well as approximately 27 grams of methamphetamine. He was prohibited from possessing the firearm because he had previously been convicted of a felony—possession of a stolen vehicle—under South Dakota law.

This case was investigated by ATF and the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Joyce prosecuted the case.

Hoff was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that Hoff’s actions put himself and others at risk, and that he will now face the consequences of his actions.

The case highlights the importance of enforcing laws related to firearm possession and the risks associated with possessing firearms as a felon. It also demonstrates the collaboration between law enforcement agencies in investigating and prosecuting crimes.
