Kyle Woman Sentenced for Bringing Vodka onto Reservation
A woman from Kyle, South Dakota, has been sentenced for her role in transporting vodka onto the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
According to court records, Donna Janis, 51, was arrested on November 7, 2012, for assisting two other individuals in transporting 72 bottles of vodka onto the reservation.
Janis was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 18, 2012, for intoxicants possessed unlawfully in Indian country. She later pleaded guilty to the charge on May 15, 2013.
On July 24, 2013, U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy sentenced Janis to one year of probation and ordered her to pay $25 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The investigation into the case was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen prosecuted the case.
Janis’ sentence is a rare example of the consequences faced by those who attempt to bring illicit substances onto Indian reservations.
