A 33-year-old Evansdale nurse, Kelsey Ann Baxter, was sentenced to federal prison for stealing pain medication from an elderly nursing home resident in Waterloo, Iowa.
According to the investigation, Baxter was working at a Waterloo nursing home as a licensed practical nurse in April 2021 when she was caught stealing and consuming two morphine pills intended for an elderly resident.
The nursing home investigated further and discovered that Baxter had diverted 43 morphine pills to her own use over a two-week period in April 2021.
The elderly resident, who suffered from physical ailments, reported not receiving pain medication despite Baxter’s documentation in the resident’s medical records.
Baxter admitted to falsifying the elderly resident’s physical and electronic medical records and the nursing home’s narcotics logs.
While awaiting sentencing, Baxter repeatedly violated the terms of her pretrial release, using controlled substances while on release.
Baxter was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams to one month imprisonment and a one-year term of supervised release.
The defendant must also forfeit her State of Iowa nursing license.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Timothy L. Vavricek and investigated by the Iowa Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
