Felon Sentenced to Six Years for Firearm Possession in Albuquerque

Donovan Maez, a 24-year-old from Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been sentenced to six years and five months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Maez pleaded guilty to the charges on April 4, 2019, and was sentenced on August 8.

According to the plea agreement, on March 30, 2018, law enforcement located Maez at an Albuquerque residence with a loaded firearm. This was not his first run-in with the law, as he was on probation for a prior felony conviction for auto burglary. As a convicted felon, Maez is not allowed to possess firearms or ammunition.

On November 11, 2018, after being contacted by probation officers and law enforcement, Maez attempted to evade the officers but was later arrested after a short pursuit. Upon his arrest, Maez was found with a loaded firearm, further violating his probation and federal law.

The investigation into this case was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Albuquerque Resident Agency, New Mexico State Police, Albuquerque Police Department, and New Mexico Corrections Department. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy D. Trembley prosecuted the case.

Maez will serve six years and five months in prison for his crimes, followed by three years of supervised release upon completion of his sentence. The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of violating federal laws related to firearm possession.
