SOUTH BEND, IN – Donta Bridges, 38, of LaPorte, Indiana, is facing serious time after a federal jury found him guilty on multiple counts related to drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession. The verdict came Wednesday, October 26, 2022, following a three-day trial before Chief Judge Jon E. DeGuilio of the Northern District of Indiana.
The feds say Bridges was caught peddling heroin not once, but twice, back in September and November of 2019. Beyond the heroin, the jury convicted him of possessing with intent to distribute heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine – a cocktail of misery he was allegedly pushing in LaPorte County. He also attempted to distribute more heroin, and to add insult to injury, was found to be a convicted felon illegally in possession of a firearm. The ATF, with help from the LaPorte County Drug Task Force, built the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kimberly L. Schultz and Jerome W. McKeever presented the evidence that convinced the jury. Details of that evidence haven’t been fully released, but it was clearly enough to secure convictions on all counts. The streets of LaPorte are a little safer now that this alleged dealer is off them, at least temporarily.
Bridges isn’t going home anytime soon. His sentencing is scheduled for January 6, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. The exact length of his sentence will be up to Judge DeGuilio, who will consider both federal statutes and sentencing guidelines. Expect a lengthy stay in a federal prison; the charges carry significant penalties.
Federal officials are framing this case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods,” a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and communities. The program emphasizes building trust, supporting community organizations, and focusing enforcement efforts where they’re needed most.
This isn’t just about one man and his bad choices. It’s a signal from the Department of Justice that they’re serious about tackling the drug trade and keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. The Chicago Field Division of the ATF led the investigation, demonstrating the agency’s commitment to disrupting these networks. Bridges now awaits his fate, a grim reminder of the consequences of dealing poison and illegally packing heat.
