The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has been hit with a shocking scandal, but this time it’s not about bank failures or financial losses. Instead, the FDIC is launching a national campaign to raise awareness about deposit insurance and protect consumers’ money.
According to sources, the FDIC has discovered a staggering number of instances where firms or individuals have misused the FDIC’s name or logo, or made false or misleading representations about deposit insurance. This has raised confusion among consumers about the insurability of nonbanks and crypto-assets.
The FDIC’s public awareness campaign, “Know Your Risk. Protect Your Money,” aims to educate consumers about the importance of deposit insurance and how it can protect their money in the event of a bank’s failure. The campaign features a piggy bank in potentially risky situations, emphasizing the need for consumers to be aware of their financial risks.
With nearly half of Americans surveyed worried about the safety of their money deposited into banks and other financial institutions, the FDIC is taking steps to address this concern. The agency has observed an increasing number of instances where consumers are putting their money at risk, and the campaign aims to educate them about the importance of deposit insurance.
The FDIC’s campaign consists of digital display ads, search engine marketing, and sponsored social media that connect consumers to deposit insurance information and resources on the FDIC’s website in English and Spanish. The digital campaign will run through November and will resume in January 2024 with the start of traditional tax filing season.
The FDIC’s Chairman, Martin J. Gruenberg, emphasized the importance of deposit insurance, stating, “Consumers today have a variety of options for where they can put their money. Evidence suggests many people may be confused whether their funds are protected by deposit insurance.” The FDIC’s public awareness campaign is a crucial step in educating consumers about the importance of deposit insurance and protecting their money.
