DoorDash Skims Dasher Tips: $16.75M Settlement Funds Available
NEW YORK – For years, DoorDash lined its pockets with money meant for the men and women hustling to deliver food across New York State. Now, a $16.75 million settlement secured by Attorney General Letitia James is finally offering some redress, but eligible drivers need to act fast. The Attorney General is urging current and former DoorDash delivery workers – known as Dashers – to file claims to receive their share of the funds by the September 30, 2025 deadline.
The Grimy Times investigation, alongside the Attorney General’s office, revealed a cynical scheme. Between May 2017 and September 2019, DoorDash operated under a “guaranteed pay” model that was anything but. While customers were led to believe their tips went directly to the Dashers, the company was using those funds to *subsidize* the guaranteed pay already offered. In short, DoorDash was pocketing the tips and then stiffing Dashers by only paying them the difference between the guaranteed amount and the tip received.
“New York’s delivery workers are integral to our communities, working tirelessly to bring food and other essentials directly to our doorsteps in all conditions,” Attorney General Letitia James stated. “I am proud to return millions to the pockets of hardworking Dashers and ensure transparency in DoorDash’s payment practices going forward. I urge any Dasher who received notice of the settlement to file a claim now to get their money back before the deadline on September 30, 2025. My office will always fight to ensure workers in New York receive the treatment, benefits, and wages they are due.”
The OAG investigation uncovered that DoorDash actively misled both customers and Dashers. At checkout, customers were prompted to tip with the deceptive message, “Dashers will always receive 100 percent of the tip.” The truth? Buried in inaccessible online documents, DoorDash was effectively stealing from its drivers. The company guaranteed a payment, then shorted the Dasher based on the customer’s tip – a clear bait-and-switch. Approximately 63,000 delivery workers who delivered for DoorDash in New York between May 2017 and September 2019 are eligible for compensation.
This settlement isn’t just about the money, though. DoorDash was also forced to revise its payment practices, enhance transparency for customers and Dashers, and improve access to order history. Eligible Dashers should have already received notice from settlement administrator Atticus Administration via mail, email, or text. If you’re a Dasher who delivered during the specified period and haven’t received a notification, or are having trouble filing a claim, don’t delay. Contact Atticus Administration directly or reach out to the Attorney General’s office for assistance.
