Texas Man Sentenced to 60 Years in Prison for Child Pornography
A Texas man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for producing hundreds of videos and images of himself sexually abusing a child, according to a local news source.
Douglas Stephen Groover, 37, was sentenced after pleading guilty in February 2020 to two counts of production of child pornography. The sentence, which was imposed by U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix of the Northern District of Texas, also included a lifetime term of supervised release and a restitution award of $53,000.
According to court documents, Groover admitted to creating hundreds of videos and images of himself sexually abusing a minor, as well as maintaining a large collection of child pornography that included depictions of the sexual abuse of infants and toddlers, sadism and bestiality. The documents also revealed that he admitted to sexually abusing at least two additional minors.
The case was investigated by HSI’s San Angelo, Texas, office, and the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the High Technology Investigative Unit within the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The investigation was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
The case highlights the severity of child sexual abuse and exploitation, and the need for continued efforts to prevent and prosecute such crimes. As part of its efforts, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has launched several initiatives to combat child exploitation, including the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force Program.
The ICAC Task Force Program brings together federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute cases of child exploitation. The program has resulted in the rescue of hundreds of children and the prosecution of numerous individuals who have committed child exploitation crimes.
As the U.S. Attorney’s Office continues to combat child exploitation, it is essential that the public remains vigilant and reports any suspicious activity to the authorities. Together, we can prevent and prosecute child exploitation crimes and keep our communities safe.
