A Philipsburg man, known for his brazen attempts to evade law enforcement, has been sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for violating a firearm law.
Doyle Wesley Pearson, 39, was handed the sentence by U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters after pleading guilty to being a prohibited person in possession of firearms on March 6, 2018. Pearson’s troubles began in 2016 when he possessed and pawned eight firearms in Livingston, Butte, and Missoula, Montana between July 29 and August 1. In an attempt to avoid raising suspicions, Pearson claimed to have pawned the firearms at eight different pawnshops.
According to court documents, Pearson’s prior convictions include a Montana failure to register as a sex offender in August 2015 and sodomy in the second degree sodomy from Oregon in 1995. At the time of his firearm offenses, Pearson was on absconder status with his supervising probation officer and was also using methamphetamine.
The case was investigated by the Bozeman Police Department, Montana Highway Patrol, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The investigation and subsequent prosecution of Pearson’s case are part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.
PSN, reinvigorated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in 2017, brings together law enforcement agencies and communities to develop effective strategies to reduce violent crime. The program has been instrumental in targeting violent criminals and improving public safety.
In a statement, officials expressed their commitment to reducing violent crime and making communities safer. “The prosecution of Doyle Wesley Pearson sends a clear message that individuals who engage in violent and firearms-related crimes will be held accountable,” said a spokesperson.
The case against Pearson serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the community in reducing violent crime. As the city of Billings continues to grapple with issues of public safety, the prosecution of Pearson’s case serves as a beacon of hope for a safer and more secure community.
