The Blackfeet Nation is fighting back against violent crime with a new grant from the federal government.

BILLINGS – The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Blackfeet Nation announced that nearly $500,000 in funding has been awarded to the tribe, based in Browning, to assist with violent crime prosecutions in tribal court and in U.S. District Court.

The grant was awarded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, which will provide the Blackfeet Nation with $499,774 to hire a tribal prosecutor. The prosecutor will be designated as a Special Assistant United States Attorney and will be able to work in both tribal and federal courts.

The funding will help the Blackfeet Nation’s current prosecution program by providing a professionally trained attorney to handle violent crime cases in tribal court and assist in bringing serious crimes into federal court.

“This opportunity and much needed funding provided through the U.S. Attorney’s Office provides our Tribal Courts prosecution division with a professionally trained attorney who will assure timely prosecution of violent crime in Tribal Court and assist in bringing serious crimes into federal court,” said Blackfeet Chairman Timothy F. Davis.

U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme praised the grant, saying it will help the Blackfeet Tribe increase the prosecution of violent offenses in tribal court and assist in bringing serious crimes into federal court. “The grant will help reduce violent crime, including drug-related activity, and improve public safety,” he said.

The Blackfeet Nation is grateful for the partnership and looks forward to improving public safety for the people of the Blackfeet Nations. With this new grant, the Blackfeet Nation is one step closer to a safer, more secure community.
