Aaron Douglas Brixey, a 27-year-old citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, was involved in a multi-car crash in February 2025 that killed Matthew Gatewood. The crash occurred when Brixey, who was driving a silver car, rear-ended multiple vehicles, including one that rolled and ejected Gatewood, resulting in his death. Brixey fled the scene, but was later found by Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers, who detected a strong smell of alcohol and found beer cans in his vehicle.
Brixey’s blood alcohol concentration was found to be 0.171, more than twice the legal limit, and toxicology reports also revealed the presence of THC in his system. This was not Brixey’s first incident of driving while intoxicated, as he was accused of causing another accident that hurt two people just 45 days prior.
Brixey was sentenced to 72 months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for his role in Gatewood’s death. The case was investigated by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Flynn.
The sentence brings closure to the family of Matthew Gatewood, who lost their loved one due to Brixey’s reckless and irresponsible actions. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving while under the influence and the devastating consequences that can result from such actions.
