On July 11, 2024, a reckless driver in Harlem, Montana, led police on a chaotic chase that ended in tragedy. Dezmond Joseph Dillon, 20, was behind the wheel, drunk and speeding over 100 mph. When officers tried to pull him over, he refused to yield, taking his passengers on a deadly ride. The pursuit ended when Dillon’s car rolled down an embankment, killing one of his passengers.

Dillon pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in December 2025. The government alleged that Dillon was already drunk when he picked up his passengers, and one of them begged him to stop the car as police pursued them. The FBI and Fort Belknap Tribal Police conducted the investigation, which revealed a horrific scene: Dillon and two passengers were severely injured, while a third passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case, which resulted in Dillon’s sentencing to 34 months and 15 days in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. U.S. District Judge William W. Mercer presided over the case.

The incident highlights the devastating consequences of drunk driving and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to prevent such tragedies.
