Edwin Leonel Rivera-Gallardo, a 40-year-old Honduras national, was arrested in Charles Town, West Virginia, for his third offense of driving under the influence, as well as fleeing and other related charges. The arrest led to the discovery that Rivera-Gallardo had reentered the US illegally, despite being removed from the country five times prior. The reentry charge stemmed from Rivera-Gallardo’s history of criminal convictions, which had resulted in the revocation of his lawful permanent residence in the US.
Rivera-Gallardo, also known as ‘William Leonel Gallardo’ and ‘Jose Ortiz Rodriguez Ortiz’, was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for the reentry charge. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eleanor Hurney, with investigative support from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Charles Town Police Department.
The sentencing is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, protecting communities from violent crime, and combating illegal immigration. U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh presided over the case.
Rivera-Gallardo’s sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the repeated attempts to reenter the US illegally. The case highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in combating organized crime and protecting national security.
