Eagle Butte Man Lands 42 Months for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon

A disturbing incident in Eagle Butte has come to an end, with 23-year-old Lawrence Mexican being sentenced to 42 months in custody for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. On February 10, 2015, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence.

According to court documents, Mexican and two accomplices unlawfully assaulted a victim with shod feet, metal crutches, and wooden clubs on July 2014 in Eagle Butte, with the intent to do bodily harm. The victim suffered serious bodily injury as a result of the assault.

The conviction arose from a federal grand jury indictment on September 16, 2014, which charged Mexican with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. Mexican pled guilty to the Assault with a Dangerous Weapon charge on November 18, 2014.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division. Mexican was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence.

The sentence includes 2 years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The case serves as a reminder of the severity of violent crimes and the consequences that follow.
