Eagle Butte Man Sentenced for Assault
In a shocking turn of events, 25-year-old Miles Condon of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, was sentenced to 36 months of custody for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding a Federal Officer. Condon, who was convicted on December 13, 2016, received the sentence on March 8, 2017, from U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange.
The assault charge stemmed from an incident on August 3, 2016, when Condon, who had been drinking alcohol, called a victim over to ask for money. A verbal argument ensued, and Condon retrieved a golf club, striking the victim above the left ear, causing a 2½” long and ½” wide gash to the victim’s skull.
The victim was taken to the emergency room at the Indian Health Service Hospital and then transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital with a skull fracture. When law enforcement responded, Condon resisted arrest, becoming belligerent and combative, and telling officers he was going to “act up.”
Condon was also sentenced to 3 years of supervised release and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $200. The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Ziebach County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuting the case.
On October 12, 2016, Condon was indicted for the assault. Law enforcement officials from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and the Ziebach County Sheriff’s Office went to Condon’s house in Dupree to execute the federal arrest warrant, but Condon became resistant, requiring officers to drag him to the patrol car and put leg irons on him.
After being booked into the Cheyenne River Adult Detention Facility, Condon became combative again, tensing up and refusing to cooperate with detention staff. He was eventually placed in a holding cell, where he kicked a detention officer in the face, knocking off the officer’s glasses.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of violence and the importance of accountability. As the investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate, law enforcement and the justice system will not tolerate such behavior, and those who commit these crimes will be held responsible.
