OAKLAND – Laron Jamal Johnson, 31, of San Leandro, is headed back to prison for over seven and a half years after being sentenced to 91 months for a litany of federal crimes. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Jon S. Tigar, stems from Johnson’s possession of a loaded Glock, a substantial amount of marijuana intended for distribution, and a brazen violation of his supervised release terms.
Federal prosecutors detailed how Johnson was caught red-handed on September 22, 2018, while traveling in Oakland. A search revealed a .40 caliber Glock handgun, 13 rounds of ammunition, and a full 100 grams of marijuana. Crucially, Johnson was already a convicted felon, making possession of both the firearm and ammunition illegal. This wasn’t a simple oversight; it was a clear disregard for the law.
The situation was compounded by the fact that Johnson was already on supervised release following a previous conviction involving drugs and weapons. His actions on September 22nd weren’t isolated – they were a direct flouting of the court-ordered conditions of his freedom. On March 8, 2019, Johnson admitted that his possession of a gun and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute violated the terms of his supervised release.
A federal grand jury indicted Johnson on December 13, 2018, charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm (18 U.S.C. § 922(g)) and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute (21 U.S.C. § 841). He subsequently pleaded guilty to both counts. Judge Tigar didn’t mince words, ordering a combined 91-month prison term to address both the new crimes and the violation of his prior release.
But the punishment doesn’t end at the prison gates. Judge Tigar also imposed a three-year term of supervised release, which will commence upon Johnson’s release from prison. And, in a clear message to deter future offenses, Judge Tigar authorized officers to conduct searches of Johnson – with or without cause – throughout the duration of his supervised release.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Thomas R. Green and Jessica Rodriguez, with the full force of the FBI investigation bringing Johnson to justice. This conviction serves as a stark reminder that those with prior convictions who illegally possess firearms and engage in drug trafficking will face serious federal consequences. The FBI’s relentless pursuit of these cases continues to keep the East Bay, and the nation, a little safer.
