Fredy Munoz-Morales, Methamphetamine Possession with Intent to Distribute, Idaho 2024

POCATELLO – In a devastating blow to East Idaho’s methamphetamine trade, two notorious traffickers were handed lengthy federal prison sentences, totaling 21.5 years.

Fredy Munoz-Morales, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen and national, was sentenced to 12.5 years in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. According to court records, the Teton County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into Munoz-Morales in April 2023, which led to the execution of a search warrant at a residence in Victor, Idaho.

Approximately seven pounds of methamphetamine were seized during the investigation, along with two firearms. Chief U.S. District Judge David C. Nye handed down the sentence earlier this week, ordering Munoz-Morales to serve five years of supervised release. Munoz-Morales had pleaded guilty to the charge on February 28, 2024.

In a separate case, Gabriel Lopez, a 40-year-old resident of Idaho Falls, was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The BADGES Task Force began investigating Lopez as the source of supply for methamphetamine to others in August 2023, ultimately leading to the execution of a search warrant at Lopez’s residence in Idaho Falls.

During the search, law enforcement seized approximately 392.2 grams of methamphetamine, as well as small amounts of cocaine and marijuana. Judge Nye also ordered Lopez to serve five years of supervised release upon completion of his prison sentence. Lopez had pleaded guilty to the charge on March 28, 2024.

U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit commended the work of the Teton County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration, which led to the charges in the Munoz-Morales case. He also applauded the Idaho State Police, which participated as part of the HIDTA BADGES Task Force, for the Lopez investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Blythe McLane prosecuted both cases.

The BADGES Task Force is a collaboration of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies that focuses primarily on drug trafficking crimes in Bannock County and throughout the region.

U.S. Attorney Hurwit’s statement on the sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in these heinous crimes: ‘These sentences demonstrate our commitment to dismantling the methamphetamine trade and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.’
