A toxic tide of untreated sewage has been flowing through East St. Louis, Illinois, for years, polluting the Mississippi River and a local park. The city’s water treatment plant has been spewing hundreds of raw sewage discharges into the community, violating the Clean Water Act.
The mess was discovered in December 2024, when the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division filed a complaint against the City.
As part of an interim agreement, the city has agreed to fix the problem, but first, it needs to come up with a solid plan to do so. A revised Long-Term Control Plan is due by June 30, 2027.
For now, residents are left to wonder when the dirty water will finally be clean. ‘This interim agreement shows a shared commitment between the parties to continue working towards the improvement of health and safety in the local community,’ said U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft.
