A chilling crime scene in Chicago turned up a smoking gun: a handgun, allegedly possessed by 25-year-old murder suspect Jose Medina-Medina. The Venezuelan national, already facing state murder charges in the slaying of an 18-year-old Loyola University student, is now locked up in federal custody, charged with illegally possessing the firearm.
According to a federal complaint, Chicago Police officers discovered the handgun during a court-authorized search of Medina-Medina’s residence in the Rogers Park neighborhood on March 20, 2026, as part of a state investigation into the murder.
Medina-Medina, an illegal alien with no lawful status in the United States, was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm, prosecutors say.
The federal charge carries a maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison, on top of the state murder charge that could put him away for life.
As an illegal alien, Medina-Medina’s presence in the United States has already attracted scrutiny. Now, the spotlight is on his alleged involvement in a deadly crime and his apparent disregard for federal firearms laws.
