SCRANTON- A dark cloud loomed over East Stroudsburg as federal charges were dropped on Naaje Torres, a 24-year-old local whose name has become synonymous with the drug trade. Torres faces serious drug trafficking charges after being indicted by a federal grand jury for his alleged involvement in the distribution of heroin.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania revealed that Torres was nailed on May 9, 2017, for his alleged actions back in April and July 2016. The indictment, finally unsealed on May 22, 2017, came after Torres’ arrest. The streets of Monroe County, Pennsylvania, are said to have been shaken by the distribution of the deadly drug within a thousand feet of Stroudsburg School District property.
This case is one for the books; it was investigated by a coalition of law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Stroud Area Regional Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean A. Camoni is taking the lead in this prosecution.
Under the banner of the Heroin Initiative, which targets the scourge of heroin across the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Torres stands accused of contributing to a nationwide epidemic. This initiative represents a coordinated effort among federal, state, and local law enforcement to track down, apprehend, and prosecute those who deal in the deadly drug.
It’s important to remember that while the United States Attorney’s Office has laid out these charges, they are merely allegations. Torres is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. If found guilty, the judge will consider federal sentencing statutes and guidelines when determining a sentence. The maximum penalty for drug trafficking under federal law is 40 years’ imprisonment, followed by supervised release and fines.
As justice unfolds, one thing remains clear: Naaje Torres stands accused of a crime that has left its mark on the community of East Stroudsburg. The battle against drug trafficking continues, with no corners cut in the pursuit of those who would bring such harm to our streets.
