ORLANDO, FL – E’Chavion Semaj Flewellen, 24, of Cocoa, Florida, will spend the next 16 years and 8 months behind bars after pleading guilty to distributing a deadly cocktail of fentanyl. U.S. District Judge Wendy W. Berger handed down the sentence Thursday, marking a significant blow to the flow of the potent opioid in Central Florida.
Court records detail a six-week spree from June through August 2023, where Flewellen repeatedly supplied a DEA confidential informant with the dangerous drug. The transactions weren’t limited to fentanyl either; one deal involved cocaine. In total, Flewellen peddled 27.96 grams of cocaine and a staggering 187.24 grams of fentanyl mixtures directly to the informant. This isn’t a small-time operation; it’s a calculated effort to profit from addiction and misery.
But the fentanyl wasn’t the only thing Flewellen was dealing. A subsequent raid on his residence revealed a veritable armory of illegal weaponry. Agents discovered 14.6 grams of fentanyl, over 50 grams of cocaine, and a hefty 263 grams of pure methamphetamine. Alongside the drugs, they seized a loaded Shadow Systems 9mm handgun, a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun, and an unloaded FEG 9mm handgun, plus hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Flewellen has forfeited all rights to these weapons as part of his plea deal.
The investigation, a multi-agency effort, involved the DEA, FBI, ATF, Melbourne Police Department, West Melbourne Police Department, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Testerman successfully prosecuted the case, building a solid case based on the controlled buys and the evidence seized during the raid. The cooperation between these agencies is crucial in tackling complex drug trafficking operations.
Federal officials are framing the sentencing as a win for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched in 2021, PSN emphasizes community trust, prevention programs, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. While programs like PSN sound good on paper, the real impact is felt when criminals like Flewellen are taken off the streets and held accountable for their actions.
Flewellen’s case underscores the ongoing fentanyl crisis plaguing the nation and the lengths to which traffickers will go to profit from it. The combination of deadly drugs and readily available firearms presents a particularly dangerous threat to communities. With over 16 years in federal prison, Flewellen will have plenty of time to reflect on the consequences of his choices – and the damage he inflicted on countless lives.
