Ex-Deputy Caught Stealing from Arrestee

TALLAHASSEE – James Corder, a 54-year-old former captain with the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office, has been accused of robbing an arrestee of approximately $1,785 in cash.

According to a five-count indictment announced by Pamela C. Marsh, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, Corder allegedly deprived the arrestee of his constitutional right to due process of law on July 25, 2013.

The indictment also accuses Corder of making false and misleading statements to FBI and FDLE agents about the theft. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison for obstruction of justice, five years for making false statements in a federal investigation, and one year for deprivation of civil rights.

The case was investigated by the FBI and FDLE, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Rhew-Miller leading the prosecution. Corder’s trial is scheduled for November 10, 2014, before U.S. District Judge Mark E. Walker.

An indictment is merely an allegation, and Corder is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The government must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.

As the investigation unfolds, it is essential to remember that an indictment is not evidence of guilt. Corder’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding the law and respecting the rights of all individuals, including those in custody.

The indictment highlights the need for accountability within law enforcement agencies and the importance of transparency in the pursuit of justice.
