BUFFALO, N.Y. – In a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against illegal immigration, U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that Lucas Celas Saula, 39, a citizen and national of Ecuador, has been arrested and charged with re-entry of a removed alien. The charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Saula, who was encountered by law enforcement at a retailer in Cheektowaga on September 7, 2025, had previously been ordered removed from the United States in November 2014. Records check revealed his citizenship status as an Ecuadorian national. During questioning, Saula was unable to produce any documents that would legally allow him to remain in the U.S.
This case is a significant component of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and safeguarding communities from violent crime. Saula’s initial appearance was before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy, where he remains detained.
The charges against Saula are the culmination of an investigation led by U.S. Border Patrol, operating under the direction of Customs and Border Protection, with Director of Field Operations Rose Brophy at the helm.
DiGiacomo’s announcement serves as a stern warning to those who attempt to circumvent the legal immigration system, underscoring the Department of Justice’s commitment to upholding national security and public safety.
U.S. Attorney Michael J. Smith is handling the case on behalf of the United States Government.
