Lawless in the Bay State: Eddy Espinal-Diaz Lands Behind Bars for Unlawful Reentry

A Dominican national with a penchant for reentering the country illegally has been handed a harsh sentence by a Massachusetts federal judge.

Eddy Espinal-Diaz, 33, a former Lawrence resident, was sentenced to one year and one day in prison, to be served concurrently with any future sentence in a pending state drug case, and three years of supervised release. The Dominican national will also face deportation proceedings.

The sentencing comes after Espinal-Diaz pleaded guilty in May 2018 to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien.

A routine traffic stop by law enforcement in Middleton on November 9, 2017, revealed Espinal-Diaz’s true intentions – to evade detection and continue living in the United States without proper documentation. However, his plan was foiled, and he was subsequently identified as an individual who had been previously deported on August 18, 2015.

U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and Rebecca Adducci, Interim Field Office Director for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, announced the sentencing.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus of Lelling’s Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case, bringing Espinal-Diaz to justice for his lawless actions.

In a statement, Attorney General Lelling emphasized the importance of upholding immigration laws and protecting the citizens of Massachusetts.
