Edgar Yovani Perez-Gutierrez, Firearm Possession, Louisiana 2025

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – A 27-year-old El Salvadoran national has been indicted for violating federal gun control laws. According to court documents, Edgar Yovani Perez-Gutierrez, a native of El Salvador, was found in possession of a Glock handgun on or about April 10, 2025.

Perez-Gutierrez, an individual unlawfully present in the United States, was arrested by the New Orleans Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations officers.

If convicted, Perez-Gutierrez faces a maximum penalty of 15 years of imprisonment, up to a $250,000 fine, up to three years of supervised release, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson reiterated that an indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson praised the work of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the New Orleans Police Department in investigating this matter.

Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis of the General Crimes Unit is in charge of the prosecution.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.
