ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In a shocking display of brutality, Edmond Andrew Yahnahki Shanta, a 23-year-old Mescalero man, was sentenced to two years and four months in prison for assault resulting in serious bodily injury in Indian Country.

The crime, which took place on July 13, 2019, in Otero County, New Mexico, on the Mescalero Apache Reservation, left the victim with a deep cut and several fractures after Shanta struck him in the face with a rock.

According to the plea agreement, Shanta assaulted the victim, causing severe injuries that required surgery and four days of medical care at a Level 1 Trauma Center in El Paso, Texas.

Shanta, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, pleaded guilty to the crime on June 4, 2020, and has since been held accountable for his actions.
