A massive marijuana bust in the Lone Star State has resulted in a lengthy prison sentence for a Mexican national.
Efren Derma-Dominguez, 26, was sentenced to 108 months in prison for possession with intent to distribute marijuana, as well as methamphetamine.
The crime dates back to January 28, 2022, when a U.S. Border Patrol agent conducted a traffic stop on a black BMW SUV driven by Derma-Dominguez. A consensual search of the SUV uncovered approximately 445.5 pounds of marijuana and 154 grams of methamphetamine.
The discovery led to Derma-Dominguez’s arrest and subsequent charges. On March 31, 2022, he pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana and methamphetamine.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas announced the sentencing, with U.S. Attorney Ashley C. Hoff stating that the lengthy prison sentence is a testament to the efforts of law enforcement in combating drug trafficking in the region.
The investigation was conducted by the DEA and U.S. Border Patrol, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott V. Greenbaum handling the prosecution.
Derma-Dominguez’s sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of getting caught with illicit substances. As the war on drugs continues, Grimy Times will be keeping a close eye on the efforts of law enforcement to keep our communities safe.
