COLUMBUS, Ohio – Adiel Hernandez-Orellana, a 39-year-old El Salvadoran national with a dark past, stood in U.S. District Court today, his plea of guilty to illegal reentry into the United States casting a shadow over his already notorious history.
Hernandez-Orellana, who was convicted of sexual assault in Arkansas, had been deported after failing to appear for an immigration court hearing in 2004. However, his return to the land of his former transgressions has landed him in hot water once more.
In 2003, Hernandez-Orellana first crossed the border into the U.S. illegally. His arrest marked the beginning of a downward spiral that included his removal order and subsequent prison sentence for sexual assault. He served seven years in Arkansas before being deported again.
This time around, the defendant was detained at the Delaware County jail in Ohio, where he faced charges for outstanding traffic warrants. His immigration offense, however, was much more serious: illegally reentering the United States after a felony conviction.
Illegal reentry is no trivial matter, especially when it involves someone with a prior sex crime conviction. The charge carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a stark reminder that justice has no expiration date for those who attempt to evade it.
The case was prosecuted by the Southern District of Ohio Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) as part of Operation Take Back America, a federal initiative designed to combat illegal immigration and protect communities from violent crime. The guilty plea entered today is yet another victory in the ongoing battle against those who seek to undermine American law and order.
With sentencing pending, Hernandez-Orellana’s future looks bleak. His return to the United States as an undocumented alien with a sex offense conviction has once again brought him face-to-face with the full weight of the law.
