The blood-red courthouse of Sherman, Texas stood as a backdrop for grim justice when Elijah El-Jihad, 47, received his due sentence for the audacious Woodforest National Bank heist. Today, this Collin County native faced the music, sentenced to 96 months in federal prison for his daring daylight bank raid.
El-Jihad’s criminal saga began on March 31, 2014, when he brazenly entered the Woodforest National Bank at the Kroger supermarket on Loy Lake Road. With a note demanding cash, he made off with approximately $800 before bolting to his vehicle, as confirmed by witnesses.
But El-Jihad’s luck ran out when he was apprehended in McKinney mere days later. On April 1, 2014, authorities arrested him and he confessed to the crime, marking the end of his fleeting freedom.
On Apr. 9, 2014, a federal grand jury indicted El-Jihad for bank robbery, setting the stage for his conviction. U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone delivered the verdict on Dec. 17, 2014, which now sees El-Jihad serving a sentence that will keep him locked away far from the streets of Sherman.
This case was meticulously investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted with tenacity by Assistant U.S. Attorney William R. Tatum, ensuring that justice was served for the victims of this heist.
As Elijah El-Jihad begins his federal prison term, those in Sherman can only hope that their city will remain free from such criminal elements for a long time to come.
