Jerry L. Wells, Jr. Charged with Heroin Distribution, Elyria OH, 2023

Elyria’s Jerry L. Wells, Jr., a 33-year-old local figure, is facing a seven-count federal indictment for narcotics and firearms violations, according to Steven M. Dettelbach, the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.

The charges against Wells include four counts of distributing heroin, possession with intent to distribute both marijuana and MDMA, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment alleges that Wells sold heroin on four separate occasions in February.

In addition to the drug-related charges, the document asserts that Wells possessed 30 grams of MDMA and 60 marijuana plants on February 21st. That same day, Wells was also found with a Taurus 9 mm pistol, despite having several previous convictions for serious crimes including heroin trafficking, cocaine trafficking, and burglary, all in Lorain County Common Pleas Court.

This investigation was jointly conducted by the Elyria Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert F. Corts will be handling the prosecution of this case.

Should Wells be convicted, his sentence will be determined by the court after considering unique factors such as his prior criminal record, role in the offense, and characteristics of the violation. It is important to note that an indictment merely serves as a charge and does not prove guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial where the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
