ALBANY, NY – Emmanuel Medina, 35, of Albany, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after admitting he packed heat to protect the profits from his heroin hustle. Medina pled guilty today to possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, a charge that carries a minimum of five years and could land him behind bars for life.
The bust went down June 27, 2022, when Troy Police responded to a disturbance in Lansingburgh. Cops found Medina outside a house, clearly trying to hide a loaded handgun inside a Jeep Wrangler. He was quickly detained without incident. A search of the vehicle revealed a Hi-Point Firearms .380 ACP pistol where Medina had been observed concealing it.
According to court documents, Medina confessed the gun wasn’t for personal defense alone. He admitted to carrying the loaded weapon to safeguard roughly $2,610.22 in cash he’d raked in from recent heroin sales. He also intended to use it to protect himself while dealing. The feds are treating this as a clear case of a drug trafficker arming himself to protect his illegal earnings.
U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Troy Police Chief Daniel DeWolf jointly announced the guilty plea, highlighting the collaborative effort that brought Medina to justice. The investigation wasn’t solely a local affair; the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) provided crucial assistance to the Troy Police Department.
Medina has been cooling his heels in custody since his arrest last June. Chief United States District Judge Brenda K. Sannes will hand down the sentence on June 21, 2023. Given the severity of the charge and the connection to drug trafficking, legal experts anticipate a substantial prison term for Medina.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Barnett is prosecuting the case, signaling the Department of Justice’s commitment to cracking down on individuals who combine drug dealing with illegal gun possession. This case serves as a grim reminder that those involved in the drug trade will face the full force of federal law if they choose to arm themselves.
