Man Sentenced for Assault in South Dakota
A Marty, South Dakota, man was sentenced to 39 months in custody for his role in a brutal assault that left a victim with serious injuries.
Eric Cournoyer, 33, was sentenced on March 20, 2017 by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier.
Cournoyer was convicted of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a federal charge that carries serious penalties.
According to court documents, the assault occurred on April 2, 2016 in Marty, South Dakota. The victim suffered fractures to his nose and eye socket, and was left with his face beaten and bloody, and his eyes swollen shut.
Cournoyer had been drinking alcohol at the time of the assault and attacked the victim while he was sleeping and defenseless.
The case was investigated by the Yankton Sioux Tribal Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper prosecuting the case.
Cournoyer was sentenced to 39 months in custody, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Cournoyer was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
