Holder Announces Same-Sex Marriage Recognition in 6 States
Attorney General Eric Holder has made a shocking announcement, stating that the federal government will now recognize same-sex married couples in six additional states. According to sources, these states include Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
This move comes after the Supreme Court’s decision to decline hearing any pending cases regarding same-sex marriage earlier this month. With this announcement, the total number of states where same-sex couples are recognized by the federal government now stands at 32, plus the District of Columbia.
The Attorney General’s announcement means that couples married in these states will now qualify for a range of federal benefits, including those administered by the Social Security Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs. In a statement, Holder said, ‘With each new state where same-sex marriages are legally recognized, our nation moves closer to achieving full equality for all Americans.’
Holder also announced that the federal government will now recognize marriages performed in Indiana and Wisconsin this past June. These marriages were performed immediately after federal district courts ruled that those states’ bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional.
According to sources, the confusion surrounding the status of these marriages has been cleared up, and those couples married during that period will now have their unions recognized by the federal government.
The full list of states where same-sex couples are recognized by the federal government now includes Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, plus the District of Columbia.
