LA CROSSE MAN SENTENCED ON METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE
A 47-year-old La Crosse man has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin.
Eric Sobek was arrested outside a hotel in Onalaska, Wisconsin, on September 17, 2019. When officers searched his car, they found a safe containing 233 grams of methamphetamine, a .226 Sig Sauer pellet gun designed to resemble a firearm, a high-capacity 9 mm magazine, and a crossbow with three bolts.
Officers also searched Sobek’s backpack and hotel room, where they found an additional 23 grams of methamphetamine. In total, officers seized 256 grams of methamphetamine.
Sobek pleaded guilty to the charge on February 19, 2020. During sentencing, U.S. District Judge William M. Conley highlighted Sobek’s extensive criminal record and history of domestic violence.
The charge against Sobek was the result of an investigation conducted by the La Crosse Police Department and the Onalaska Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chadwick M. Elgersma handled the prosecution of the case.
Sobek will serve five years of supervised release after his prison term. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against methamphetamine trafficking in the region.
The La Crosse community is breathing a sigh of relief after the sentencing of Eric Sobek, a man who posed a significant threat to public safety.
