Erie Man Charged with Bankruptcy Fraud
A 45-year-old Erie resident has been hit with a federal indictment for concealing property from the United States Bankruptcy Trustee in connection with his bankruptcy case.
Douglas A. Grooms, 45, was named the sole defendant in a one-count indictment presented to the court. According to the indictment, Grooms allegedly hid assets from the trustee in his bankruptcy case.
The law provides for a maximum total sentence of five years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced the indictment, which was the result of an investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold will be prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The court will determine Grooms’ guilt and the severity of the punishment.
The case against Grooms serves as a reminder that violating federal bankruptcy laws will not be tolerated. The public can expect stiff penalties for those who attempt to deceive the system.
