ERIE, Pa. – Amaad Maliek Ali, a former resident of Erie, has been hit with serious federal charges after admitting to lying on his firearms purchase and United States passport applications. According to the Department of Justice USAO for Pennsylvania, the 48-year-old pleaded guilty in federal court before Judge Susan Paradise Baxter.
The court was informed that on April 7, 2018, Ali falsely claimed no prior felony convictions on his firearm application, which led to a National Instant Criminal Background Check rejection due to his criminal past. Additionally, it was revealed that on April 18, 2017, Ali submitted a fraudulent passport application with a fake social security number.
Judge Baxter has scheduled sentencing for September 26, 2019, at 1:30 p.m., where Ali faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine of $500,000, or both. Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold is handling the prosecution for the government.
Investigations into Ali were conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), Pennsylvania State Police, and the Erie Police Department. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), a DOJ initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through comprehensive community solutions.
Through PSN, various stakeholders collaborate to pinpoint local violent crime issues and develop strategies for long-term reductions in crime rates. Ali’s prosecution aligns with PSN’s focus on the most violent offenders, complemented by partnerships with local programs aimed at preventing and reintegrating former offenders into society.
