Esam Salah, 54, Charged With Tax Evasion in Pennsylvania

A hard-hitting indictment has been brought against a Villanova businessman, accused of masterminding a multi-year tax evasion scheme that bilked the Internal Revenue Service out of nearly $3 million.

Esam Salah, 54, president and sole shareholder of several restaurants in the Philadelphia area, allegedly failed to report cash revenue of approximately $2,769,813 from January 2008 to April 2011, according to an information filed by Acting United States Attorney Louis D. Lappen.

The indictment alleges that Salah used the unreported cash revenue to pay employee salaries at two of his restaurants, while also neglecting to pay $506,875 in federal employee tax withholding and Social Security and Medicare taxes.

If convicted, Salah faces a maximum possible sentence of 5 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, a three-year period of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment.

The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Judy G. Smith.

Salah, who is currently presumed innocent, is scheduled to face trial in the coming weeks. His exact fate will be decided in the courtroom.

As the investigation unfolds, one thing is clear: Salah’s alleged crimes have left a trail of debt and financial strain on his business and the community.
