A deadly shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida has left five people dead and six wounded.
Esteban Santiago Ruiz, 26, of Alaska, has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting that occurred on January 6, 2017, at approximately 12:56 p.m. in the Terminal 2 baggage claim area of the airport.
Ruiz allegedly pulled out a handgun and started shooting at his victims, aiming at their heads until he was out of ammunition. He was subsequently confronted by a Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputy and dropped his handgun before being arrested.
Ruiz is facing charges of performing an act of violence against a person at an airport serving international civil aviation that caused serious bodily injury, using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, and causing the death of a person through the use of a firearm in the course of a violation of 18 U.S.C. section 924(c).
The charges authorize a maximum penalty of death or imprisonment for life or any term of years.
Ruiz is expected to have his initial appearance on Monday, January 9, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. before United States Magistrate Judge Alicia O. Valle in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
