Christine King, Mail Fraud, Iowa 2014

CHRISTINE KING, the former city clerk of Masonville, Iowa, was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for her role in a $80,000 fraud scheme that spanned nearly a decade. King, 42, from Strawberry Point, pleaded guilty on May 5, 2014, to one count of mail fraud.

In court documents, it was revealed that King issued herself fraudulent payroll and expense reimbursement checks while working as the city clerk from July 2002 to October 2011. To cover her tracks, she also falsified bank account balances in reports provided to the city council and Iowa State Auditor, attempting to conceal the theft.

The court’s final determination indicated that King had embezzled $81,524.24 from Masonville. Additionally, she was held responsible for an audit bill of $11,070.57 from the Iowa State Auditor following the discovery of her fraud.

United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade sentenced King to 21 months’ imprisonment in Cedar Rapids on July 14, 2014. A special assessment of $100 was imposed, and King was ordered to pay $82,594.81 in restitution to Masonville and $10,000 to an insurance company. Following her prison term, King will serve a three-year supervised release without parole.

King is scheduled to surrender to the United States Marshal on August 4, 2014. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Morfitt and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
