Former North Braddock police officer Joseph Lynn, of McKeesport, has pleaded guilty to stealing cash seized as evidence during a criminal investigation—a brazen breach of trust that has landed him on probation and stripped of any chance to wear a badge again. The case, prosecuted by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, exposes a cold betrayal at the heart of local law enforcement.
Lynn admitted to unlawfully taking money collected as part of a Blawnox criminal probe—an act that triggered charges not only for Theft by Unlawful Taking, but also for Tampering with/Fabricating Physical Evidence and Obstructing Administration of Law or Other Government Function. Officials say the theft occurred while he was actively serving as an officer, exploiting his access to evidence in a move that undermines public faith in police integrity.
Attorney General Josh Shapiro did not mince words. ‘Joseph Lynn’s actions betray the hard work and integrity of the men and women in the North Braddock and Blawnox police departments,’ Shapiro stated. ‘Enforcing the law does not put you above it.’ The AG emphasized that his office will pursue such crimes relentlessly, regardless of the badge involved.
Lynn will serve a term of probation as determined by the Allegheny County Court. Crucially, the sentence bars him permanently from any future employment as a law enforcement officer—a fitting end to a career derailed by greed. No restitution amount or specific dollar value stolen was disclosed in court filings.
The investigation was led by the Pennsylvania State Police’s Organized Crime Unit and FBI-Pittsburgh, with support from the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office. Deputy Attorney General Summer Carroll handled the prosecution, securing convictions that send a clear message: corruption within the ranks will not go unchecked.
This case adds to a growing list of police misconduct cases under the Pennsylvania AG’s watch, underscoring a pattern of accountability in public office. As communities demand transparency, the takedown of Joseph Lynn stands as both a warning and a measure of justice delivered.
