Former East Oakland Boxing Association (EOBA) Executive Director Howard Solomon, also known as Solomon Howard, has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for embezzling over $549,000. Solomon was also ordered to pay restitution totaling $836,317.74 to the EOBA and IRS.
Solomon, 38, pleaded guilty on April 23, 2025, to mail fraud and tax evasion charges. He served as Executive Director of EOBA from 2017 to 2021, during which time he misappropriated funds for personal expenses, including a vacation rental and a Ford Explorer.
United States Attorney Craig H. Missakian called Solomon’s actions ‘unspeakable greed,’ emphasizing the harm caused to East Oakland’s youth programs. Linda Nguyen of IRS-CI highlighted the agency’s role in following the money to ensure justice for the EOBA and its beneficiaries.
The embezzled funds included a $50,000 donation from a television studio linked to Stephen Curry’s Ellen DeGeneres Show appearance. Solomon failed to disclose the stolen funds as income, evading approximately $287,185 in taxes.
In addition to prison and restitution, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers sentenced Solomon to three years of supervised release. His sentence begins on Oct. 30, 2025.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas R. Green led the prosecution with support from Amala James and Alycee Lane. The case was investigated by IRS-CI.
