Kelly David Ankeny, Armed Career Criminal Act, Oregon 2023

Kelly David Ankeny, Sr., 61, a Portland man with a history of violent crime, has been sentenced to 230 months in federal prison for new drug and firearm offenses committed while on post-prison supervision.

According to court documents, Ankeny was released from federal prison in August 2018 after serving more than 15 years for his first conviction under the Armed Career Criminal Act. However, he failed to stay clean and was soon committing new crimes.

The ex-wife of Ankeny tried to intervene and get him to leave his son’s house, but Ankeny twice threatened her with a firearm. The police were called, and during a search of the house, officers found Ankeny with several firearms, including a loaded handgun, a sawed-off shotgun, and a rifle.

Ankeny was indicted by a federal grand jury in January 2004 for being a felon in possession of a firearm and illegally possessing an unregistered sawed-off shotgun. He pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced to federal prison. After his release, he was placed on supervised release, but he failed to comply with the terms of his release and was arrested again in 2019.

During the search of Ankeny’s residence, officers found more than four pounds of methamphetamine, a pound of heroin, and drug packaging material. Ankeny was charged with possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine, heroin, and cocaine; possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime; and illegally possessing firearms as a convicted felon.

Ankeny pleaded guilty to possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine and illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. He was sentenced to 230 months in federal prison.

Ankeny’s case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, and Oregon State Police Forensic Services Division.
