Medford’s Nicholas James Shaw has been handed a 120-month sentence for a chilling scheme that preyed on an Oregon child through online messaging apps. The 38-year-old was caught using Snapchat and Kik Messenger to coerce explicit communications and images from his underage victim, authorities revealed.
According to court documents, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) received CyberTips in early 2022, leading them to trace the digital trail back to Shaw. He had been engaged in a months-long campaign of online sexual exploitation, using threats and coercion to obtain explicit photos and videos from his underage victim.
On June 28, 2022, HSI agents swooped in on Shaw’s residence, executing a federal search warrant that uncovered a trove of child sexual abuse material. The next day, Shaw was arrested and charged with a litany of offenses related to child pornography. He pleaded guilty on January 21, 2025, accepting a plea agreement that includes full restitution to his victims.
This case underscores the increasingly dangerous landscape of cybercrime, where predators use technology to exploit vulnerable minors. The investigation was conducted by HSI with support from the Medford Police Department, and the prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney John C. Brassell for the District of Oregon.
Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse, brought this case to light. For those who may have information on similar crimes, HSI encourages contacting them at (866) 347-2423 or submitting tips online at report.cybertip.org. Remember, every image and video is a document of a crime against a child, and sharing such material re-victimizes these innocent victims.
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children offers more information at www.missingkids.org, emphasizing the importance of protecting our children from online predators.
