MEDFORD, Ore. – Nicholas James Shaw, 38, of Medford, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced for a sickening pattern of online abuse. Shaw used social media platforms Snapchat and Kik Messenger to groom, coerce, and sexually exploit a vulnerable child. The sentence, handed down today, reflects the severity of his crimes and the lasting damage inflicted upon the victim.
Shaw received 120 months – a full decade – in federal prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release. Beyond incarceration, Shaw has been ordered to pay $66,000 in restitution to his victim, a small measure of accountability for the trauma he caused. The case began to unravel in March 2022 when Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) received CyberTips from Snapchat and Kik Messenger flagging concerning content uploaded to the platforms between October 2021 and April 2022.
Investigators quickly zeroed in on Shaw, discovering he’d spent approximately eight months engaging in explicit communications with the minor, systematically coercing the child into producing and sending sexually explicit photos and videos. The investigation revealed a calculated and predatory scheme, exploiting the anonymity of the internet to target a vulnerable individual. On June 28, 2022, HSI agents executed a search warrant at Shaw’s residence, seizing electronic devices brimming with child sexual abuse material.
The following day, Shaw was arrested and charged with transportation, receipt, distribution, possession, and access with intent to view child pornography. He eventually pleaded guilty on January 21, 2025, to the charge of coercion and enticement of a minor, agreeing to full restitution and forfeiture of any assets used in the commission of his crimes. This plea, while avoiding a lengthy trial, doesn’t diminish the horror of his actions.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, led by HSI with crucial assistance from the Medford Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney John C. Brassell prosecuted the case, ensuring Shaw faced justice for his depraved acts. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online and the importance of vigilance in protecting children.
