BOSTON – Federal prosecutors have handed down a three-year prison sentence to John Schurko, 58, for his brazen use of an airsoft gun in the December 2021 robbery of the Harvard Market in Malden.
Schurko pleaded guilty to interference with commerce by robbery in February 2024. The incident occurred on Dec. 12, 2021, when Schurko entered the market and brandished a black handgun, demanding cash from the clerk. After fleeing, he was apprehended with his getaway car found in Medford the following day.
During a search of the vehicle, authorities recovered a black Airsoft gun that closely resembled an actual firearm. Schurko was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton to three years in prison, followed by two years of supervised release.
The investigation and prosecution were led by Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Massachusetts State Police, and local law enforcement agencies including Malden, Medford, Billerica, and Woburn police departments.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert E. Richardson handled the prosecution for the Major Crimes Unit.
John Schurko’s sentence underscores the serious consequences faced by those who engage in violent crime with weapons that mimic real firearms.
